Speakers: Hannah Thompson, Research Lead, Alison Eardley, Lead Communication, the Sensational Museum and Rachel Teskey, Director, Barker Langham

The Sensational Museum rejects the ‘look and learn’ approach that influenced how museums communicate with audiences. Instead we create environments where no one sense is necessary or sufficient for meaningful engagement. We encourage museums to embed inclusive design and content into everything, meaning that every museum visitor and professional knows that the museum will be accessible to them.
Participants will learn about the theory behind the Sensational Museum, explore the practical tasks and tools we have created, and find out more about accessing our outputs.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the way in which multisensory experiences can transform museums into welcoming spaces for everyone.
  • Appreciate how the experience and expertise of people living with disability can have value for everyone.
  • Use a set of co-creation practices to develop of inclusive multisensory museum interpretation.
  • Learn about how The Sensational Museum pilot museums tested and refined our tools, as well as the outputs they developed and the co-created, public-facing interventions they implemented.
