Speakers: Richard Morsley, Chief Executive, Olivia Horner, Commercial Director, Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust

In March 1984 Chatham Dockyard closed after more than four centuries of Royal Naval history leaving a deep economic, social and cultural void in the Medway Towns. Today, The Historic Dockyard Chatham stands as the most complete dockyard from the Age of Sail and has re-established itself at the heart of the community. It demonstrates how heritage can be safeguarded not only through preservation but through purposeful, adaptive reuse.

The Dockyard is now a thriving mixed-use heritage estate: a visitor attraction and museum; a base for creative industries, university campuses; and a residential community of more than 400 people across 80 acres. It is a sought-after film location and a venue for events, hospitality and cultural activity. Its diversity underpins a unique operating model that enables Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust to maintain a significant heritage site while generating economic, social and financial resilience.

In 2025 the Trust launched a new 10-year strategy setting out ambitious plans for the future. This session will explore how Chatham’s transformation offers a blueprint for resilient heritage futures and how its approach could be adapted across the sector.
