Speakers: Joe Sullivan, Director, Holly Burrows, Commercial Manager and Alice Morris, Graphic Designer, The Cartoon Museum

During 2023 The Cartoon Museum got its act together in doing its part to meet the challenge of the climate crisis. The start point was planning on an upcoming exhibition based around a pioneering environmental cartoon book, ‘The Effluent Society’, by cartoonist Norman Thelwell. We used the opportunity to look at our own behaviour, including our carbon footprint relating to exhibitions and communications, and our relationship to our local area. We partnered with other businesses in our London ward to take part in the Mayor’s Business Climate Challenge, aiming to reduce our emissions by 10% in a year. The curatorial team used the exhibition’s cartoons and to challenge and inspire our visitors to act in a more sustainable way, and consider how they could do this. We also looked at the materials we were using, and the partners we were working with in producing the exhibition, and related merchandise in the shop. We didn’t succeed at everything – but we learnt a lot along the way, and can share some tips and ideas on how you can get on top of your own sustainability concerns, and set a great example for your visitors.
